Volunteer Program

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of a commitment do I have to make to volunteer?

We ask that most volunteers commit to an average of eight hours per month for at least twelve months, or 100 hours over the course of a year. In order to volunteer in a capacity that works directly with survivors, you must successfully complete a volunteer application and criminal background check, participate in a screening interview, complete the 68-hour training and participate in program specific orientation.

Some positions do not require the same amount of time commitment or training; please contact the Volunteer & Event Coordinator for more details.

Can I volunteer with TWS to satisfy community service requirements?

Yes, however it does depend on the reason for needing to complete community service. Please contact the Volunteer & Event Coordinator for more information.

When can I attend a training session?

Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) sessions are held twice a year, September-October and April-May. Exact dates are provided on the training information page. View the previous trainings syllabus.

Will I be required to pay for anything during training?

Training only costs $75, $40 of which is refundable after finishing 100 hours of volunteering in one year. The cost for students is $50 with $25 refundable after 100 hours of volunteering in one year. This fee helps cover the cost of course materials, snacks, and fingerprinting. TWS wants this training to be accessible to everyone, if the fee is too much please contact the Volunteer & Event Coordinator and we will be glad to work with you.

What do I do if I can't attend a training session?

If you are attending CIT you may miss no more than 6 hours to receive full credit for attending the 68 hour training. However, missed sessions can be made up in the next volunteer training. Unfortunately, you will be unable to volunteer until you have successfully completed all 68-hours of CIT.

Are there opportunities at Tahoe Women’s Services for men to volunteer?

Yes! Men can volunteer in every area of our agency except for our Safe House. We find it extremely beneficial to have male volunteers serve as positive male role models for children.

Are there opportunities for large groups to volunteer?

Unfortunately there are no opportunities at this time. For more information contact the Volunteer Coordinator.

Can I bring food to the training?

Sodas and light snacks will be provided at each training class. On Saturdays bagels, fruit, juice and coffee will be provided. Feel free to bring your dinner and eat during training. We just ask that you help keep the room clean.
