TAHOE WOMEN'S SERVICES HISTORY & ACCOMPLISHMENTS


1982
 

A small group of grassroots volunteers convened to start a program for sexual assault survivors.

1985
 

Tahoe Women’s Services incorporated as a non-profit agency. Tahoe Women’s services mission is to reduce the incidence and trauma of domestic violence and sexual assault.

1988
 

Tahoe Women’s Services became independent from Placer Women’s Center, but still received grants that were administered by Placer Women’s Center.

1st Annual Chocolate Festival held.

1989
 

2nd Annual Chocolate Festival held.

1990
 

3rd Annual Chocolate Festival held at Northstar-At-Tahoe.

1991
 

4th Annual Chocolate Festival held at Northstar-At-Tahoe.

1992
 

Financial and program growth; expansion of agency budget from $120,000 to $450,000; increase from 2 to 7 full-time staff. Lake Tahoe Community Trust funding helped create solvency for the organization.

5th Annual Chocolate Festival held at Northstar-At-Tahoe.

1993
 

6th Annual Chocolate Festival held at Northstar-At-Tahoe.

1994
 

Full independence from Placer Women’s Center.

7th Annual Chocolate Festival held at Northstar-At-Tahoe.

1995
 

November 1st – opened the Mountain Rose Safe House for domestic violence survivors – began as a 45 day program (has since expanded to a 60 day program).

Opened the Incline Village Office with a part-time staff person, to ensure that Incline Village residents receive service.

TWS, in conjunction with the Domestic Violence Coalition based in Grass Valley, opened an office in the Joseph Center in Truckee.

8th Annual Chocolate Festival held at Northstar-At-Tahoe.

1996
 

Hired a full-time staff person for the Incline Village Office.

9th Annual Chocolate Festival held at Northstar-At-Tahoe.

1997
 

Sexual Assault Prevention Program started with funding from CA Office of Criminal Justice Program.

New logo developed for TWS designed by Annaliese Miller of Truckee.

TWS was selected to be a site for VISTA volunteers.

10th Annual Chocolate Festival held at Northstar-At-Tahoe.

1998
 

Website developed for TWS www.tahoesites.com/tws.

First free legal clinic offered to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

11th Annual Chocolate Festival held at Northstar-At-Tahoe.

1999
 

“Where Do You Feel Safe” poster campaign implemented throughout North Tahoe and Truckee.

2000
 

“Safe Haven” sticker campaign implemented throughout North Tahoe and Truckee (store owners placed a Safe Haven sticker in their window, so survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault would know the business was a safe place).

12th Annual Chocolate Festival held at Tahoe Biltmore.

2001
 

Implemented Capital Campaign to purchase the Mountain Rose Safe House – raised over $130,000 from community businesses, social groups, foundations and community individuals.

TWS website revamped by Sierra Web Designs & moved to www.tahoewomenservices.org.

Expanded staff by 4 to include 16 full-time & 4 part-time staff; restructured programs from a geographical focus to a client service based focus – created the Non-Residential (Client Services) Program.

Held the 1st Annual TWS Ski Day at Sugar Bowl Ski Resort.

13th Annual Chocolate Festival held at Tahoe Biltmore.

2002
 

With a grant from the California Emergency Housing and Assistance Program (over $170,000) and a local Capital Campaign, TWS was able to purchase the Mountain Rose Safe House.

Incline Village TWS office moved into the DW Reynolds Non-Profit Center in Incline Village.

Kings Beach Client Services Program moved to 8520 Brook Avenue, providing ADA accessibility for clients.

14th Annual Chocolate Festival held at Tahoe Biltmore.

2003
 

Agency budget exceeds $1 million dollars.

15th Annual Chocolate Festival raised $36,000, the most successful festival to date.

Produced Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues at the Cal Neva to a sold out crowd.

Received a Family Violence Prevention and Services Program Federal Grant for $68, 386 (1 of 9 programs chosen to receive this grant across the U.S.)

2004
 

Received $125,000 grant from State of California Office of Emergency Services to implement the Child Abuse Treatment program to help survivors of child abuse, and added the program to our mission statement.

Vagina Monologues at the Cal Neva raised $14,500.

4th Annual Ski Day at Sugar Bowl raised $21,000.

“Keep Tahoe Safe” bumper sticker created.

TWS merchandise made available for sale.

16th Annual Chocolate Festival at The Tahoe Biltmore raised $32,000.

2005
 

Karen Edwards from Gardnerville Family Support Counsel joined TWS as Executive Director.

Children’s Program started and housed in Kings Beach office.

Vagina Monologues at the Cal Neva raised $14,700.

5th Annual Ski Day at Sugar Bowl raised $10,700.

TWS website set up to accept credit cards for Chocolate Festival and other events.

17th Annual Chocolate Festival at The Chateau in Incline Village raised $44,000.

Staff now includes 23 staff full time & part time, and 3 AmeriCorps volunteers.

Remodeled the Brook Street Client Service office in Kings Beach.

2006 

Consolidated Prevention office and Truckee office to new larger office on Business Park Drive in Truckee.

Vagina Monologues at the Truckee Community Center raised $21,000.

6th Annual Ski Day at Northstar raised $22,600.

18th Annual Chocolate Festival at the North Lake Conference Center raised $55,000.

2007  

Vagina Monologues at the Cal Neva raised $26,000.

7th Annual Ski Day at Northstar raised $13,000.

Take Back The Night rally in Tahoe City.

Kiwanis Club Beach Ball Benefit raised $11,000

1st Collaborative Kermes at the Boy’s & Girl’s Club in Kings Beach.

TWS website completely redesigned by Wolfsmith Media: www.tahoewomenservices.org.

Rotary Bowl-a-thon raised $3,100

 Beneficiary of Maiden's Faire on May 24th at the Bijou Center to support local business owners, artists and musicians

Beneficary of Charlie Musselwhite Concert on August 28th at Truckee River Park Amphitheater

First Annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event held to raise awareness about violence against women.  Held October 3rd in downtown Truckee

Beneficiary of Downtown Truckee's Annual Wine, Walk and Shop held on October 3rd

For fist year, collaborated with Project MANA to bring the 21st Annual Chocolate, Wine  & Roses Festival to the North Lake Tahoe communties.  Event held November 7th at North Tahoe Conference Center.  Event raised more than $70,000.

Started first-ever endowment with Parasol Community Foundation

 

 

2010

 First Annual Father Daughter Dance held in Crystal Bay on Febuary 5th

New play: "Voices: A Celebration of Dance Theater" in collaboration with InnerRhythms Dance Theatre held at No. Tahoe High School April 30 and May 1

Ski in April at Northstar-At-Tahoe raised over $25,000

Take Back the Night rally, march and speak-out held on April 16th in Downtown Truckee

In FY 09/10, TWS raised more than $135,000 for Cashflow Reserve Fund

 

Tahoe Women's Services has four offices in the North Lake Tahoe region.

is a community-based organization providing direct services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and other individuals in crisis. Incorporated as an independent non-profit, 501(c)3 public benefit corporation in 1985, the agency maintains three office sites, one shelter and has 22 staff members and 3 AmeriCorps Volunteers.
