CHILDREN'S PROGRAM

Current research suggests that 3.3 to 10 million children witness domestic violence in the United States. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually assaulted by the time they reach the age of 18. These are frightening, but true statistics!

Children exposed to domestic violence are often referred to as the “unseen victims.” Even though violence may be occurring only between the adults in the home, the children witnessing such situations are negatively affected as well. These children may try to protect the victim and consequently be physically harmed. Also, children tend to think they are the cause of the violence in the home. The effects of domestic violence and abuse on children can produce significant deterioration in a child’s behavioral, emotional, physical, social and cognitive functioning. Some of the negative effects that are seen in children include aggression, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, restlessness, poor academic performance, withdrawal from relationships with friends and family and fear. The consequences of domestic violence in a family can be devastating on the children.

Tahoe Women's Services helps with all types of domestic abuse.

Violence is a learned behavior and Tahoe Women’s Services strives to stop the cycle of violence within families by providing a broad range of services to youth and families in our community.

Our Children’s Program includes the Children’s Program Manager, Children’s Program Coordinator, Bi-lingual Family Advocate, and our Volunteers. The Children’s Program Mission aims to provide comprehensive treatment and services to children who have experienced, witnessed, or are at risk of abuse. Tahoe Women’s Services supports children who are at risk by providing advocacy, accompaniment, and support groups as well as individual and group therapy. Our program is designed to help children understand that THEY ARE NOT responsible for their parent’s actions. The program also helps them heal from the trauma of violence and abuse, and how to be safe at home and in the community.

The Children’s Program consists of a variety of groups and activities, including the Pattern Changing Group, Kid’s Time, Pet Therapy, Safe House Children’s Group, Children’s Yoga Group and the Gardening Group.

Holiday Hope Program

The Holiday Hope Program is a collaborative holiday giving program between TWS, North Tahoe Family Resource Center (NTFRC), and the generous donors in our community.  Donors adopt individuals and families working with either TWS or the NTFRC, and provide assistance with basic needs as well as holiday gifts.  It is an amazing program that showcases the kindness of neighbors in sharing their time, energy, and kindness with children and families in need of help during the holidays.   Last year the Holiday Hope Program was able to serve 112 families with the help of 82 donors. The Holiday Hope Program is an opportunity to give back to our community and an effective way to help local families in need.  If you would like to adopt an individual or family, please contact Cecilia and Jessica at TWS at 546-7804, OR North Tahoe FRC at 546-0952.
